'Hidden Killer' Asbestos Campaign to warn against complacency
As the HSE has embarked on its national "Hidden Killer" asbestos campaign to draw attention to the fact that asbestos still presents a significant workplace hazard, companies and workers have been reminded of the continuing health risk in the modern workplace.
If you or a member of your family suffers from an asbestos-related illness please contact Kevin Finneran or Neil Hunt in Michelmores clinical negligence and personal injury team free confidential advice. Freephone 0800 0730140.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has called on tradesmen and businesses to ensure they remain vigilant about the toxic substance to avoid exposure to the risk of potentially fatal disease.
The HSE advised that many older premises which incorporate asbestos lagging and other asbestos-based materials present a risk of mesothelioma and related illnesses to those working on them.
Steve Coldrick, HSE's asbestos programme director, states that these diseases kill around 4,000 workers annually and added "It isn't just a risk of a bygone age and tradesmen cannot afford to be complacent."
This initiative comes at a time when the government is debating the introduction of legislation which would see sufferers of asbestos-related pleural plaques given the right to seek compensation from their employers.
