Introduction - What are they?
Strategic Health Authorities (StHAs) exist to oversee the provision of healthcare across a given region. They can be thought of as "local headquarters" for the NHS. There are 28 StHAs in England. They have been formed by amalgamating the bodies that used to be in place, which were just called Health Authorities (these had greater responsibilities over smaller areas).
